Biography 

Klaus Welle was born on 3 July 1964 in Beelen, Germany. He obtained a degree in economics from the University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany and was the recipient of grants from the Students' Foundation of the German People and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation as well as receiving student sponsorship from the Westdeutsche Landesbank.

Administrative and political posts held

  • 1984-1986: Banking studies, Westdeutsche Landesbank, Münster
  • 1986-1987: Military service with the Luftwaffe
  • 1991-1994: Head of the European and Foreign Policy Department at the CDU Central Office, Bonn
  • 1994-1999: Secretary-General of the European People's Party (EPP) and the European Union of Christian Democrats (EUCD)
  • 1999-2003: Secretary-General of the EPP-ED Group in the European Parliament
  • 2004-2007: Director-General for Internal Policies, European Parliament
  • 2007-2009: Head of the Cabinet of the President of the European Parliament
  • 2009-2022: Secretary-General of the European Parliament
