Biography

Cristiana Muscardini was born in Cannobio, Italy. She graduated in Philosophy before working as a journalist and publicist. Muscardini was executive of the National University Action Front, the university branch of the neofascist party Movimento Sociale Italiano (MSI). She also was municipal councillor of Milan from 1980 to 1990 and in 1991 municipal councillor of Varese. In the 1983 Italian general election she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies. 

In the 1989 European Parliament election she was elected MEP for the first time and would be re-elected in 1994, 1999, 2004 and 2009. From 2000 to 2004, she was Vice-Chairwoman of the Union for Europe of the Nations Group and from 2001 to 2009 she held the position of General Secretary of the Alliance for Europe of the Nations. During her time in the European Parliament, she was member of the Technical Group of Independent Members, the Union for Europe of the Nations Group, the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and the European Conservatives and Reformists Group.

During her time as MEP, she was Vice-Chair and member of the Committee on International Trade. She was also a member of the committees on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety; Foreign Affairs; Human RightsSecurity and Defence; and Culture, Youth, Education and the Media. In addition, she was a member of the Conference of Presidents. 

Cristiana Muscardini was moreover member of numerous delegations. These included the delegations for relations with RussiaSouth AfricaIsraelPeople's Republic of ChinaIraq; the Delegation to the EU-Kazakhstan, EU-Kyrgyzstan, EU-Tajikistan and EU-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committees and for relations with Turkmenistan and Mongolia (DCAS); the Gulf States and Maghreb countries and the Arab Maghreb Union. She was also a member of the Delegation to the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (DLAT), the Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean (DMED), and the Joint Assembly of the Agreement between the African, Caribbean and Pacific States and the European Union (DACP). In addition, she took part in the delegation to the EU-Cyprus Joint Parliamentary Committee and the Delegation for relations with Malta.

Muscardini has published several books on Europe and European politics, including L'Europa promessa (2004) and L'Europa in Tavola (2009). She has been awarded Commander of the Knightly Order of St. Mauritius and Lazarus. In 2005 she received the gold medal from the Luxembourg “Mérite Européen” foundation. She has also received various other awards, including literary prizes such as the Adelaide Ristori Prize and the Ciclope d'argento.

The first relates to the MEP’s parliamentary activities as Vice-Chair of the Committee on International Trade (2009-2014) and as member of the Delegation to the EU-Kazakhstan, EU-Kyrgyzstan, EU-Tajikistan and EU-Uzbekistan Parliamentary Cooperation Committees and for relations with Turkmenistan and Mongolia (2004-2009). 

The second series is related to the political activities of the MEP, as Co-Chair (2000-2004) and president (2004-2009) of the Union for Europe of the Nations Group, President of the national party Conservatori e Social Riformatori (2012-2014), member of the national parties Futuro e Libertà per l'Italia (2011-2012), and Il Popolo della Libertà (2009-2011), President of the Delegation of Alleanza nazionale at the European Parliament (1999-2009) and member of Movimento sociale italiano - Destra nazionale (1989-1994).
