Biography

Born in Kiel, Germany, Angelika Beer was a Member of the European Parliament from the 20th of July 2004 to the 13th of July 2009. She was a member of the Group of the Greens/European Free Alliance during this period.

As Chair of the Delegation for relations with Iran, Beer sought to act or to bring influence to bear on a number of sensitive issues. Several subjects are represented in her archive collection, from Iran’s nuclear policy and programme to respect for human rights in this country.

Beer was very involved in combating the extreme right, both at European level and in Germany. She became involved by attending conferences and taking part in awareness-raising campaigns to mobilise public opinion about this subject. At the time of the 2009 European elections, Beer was active in a campaign entitled ‘No votes for the extreme right’. She remarked, "European right-wing extremists are beginning to work together more closely. We need to face up to the possible challenge of a pan-European network of right wing extremists in the next European Union elections."

She also acted as rapporteur on behalf of the Committee on Foreign Affairs for two parliamentary reports on assistance regarding nuclear safety and security and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.

On a more personal level, Beer campaigned against discrimination and sought to promote equality of opportunity and the development of an integration policy. In 2004, for example, Beer supported the establishment of the Antiracism and Diversity Intergroup within the European Parliament.
